About Me

I’m a diligent editor certified from the University of Michigan. From a young age, I've had many opportunities to hone my craft of writing and editing, as I was blessed to have one brother as an author, another as a filmmaker, and a sister as a journalist.

Background: Annie Sprat @ Unsplash

Being a writer myself, I understand the budget challenge of rising creators, so I guarantee to give premium services and feedback at freelancing rates. To every project, I bring five years of editing experience; lessons from award-winning storytellers such as John Truby and Alan Baxter; and a passion for inclusive, personalized expression.

Testimonials

Watts is an extremely skilled, concise and thorough editor. His line editing is done professionally and when in doubt his communication is on point. He offers suggestions that are clear and provides the writer opportunities to improve.- Joanita Theron

Watts definitely helped me with wording and better ways to piece together the dialogue, and they provided advice on how to organize scenes from my fantasy novel. That definitely helped me think about how best to slow down the plot and make things flow better.
- Hannah

Watts didn’t just edit my story - Watts took the time to familiarize themselves with my voice, which as a BIPOC author is very important to me. They kept me cued in during the process, and suggested changes that amplified my work without altering my style. Cardin Watts went above and beyond helping me edit over thirty-thousand words in under three weeks. I would and do suggest him to anyone I come across looking for an editor.

Every manuscript is at a different stage of the creative process. Take a look at the list below to see which service would help your story best.

  • Proofreading: A proofreader checks over your work for typos and grammatical errors, and makes sure that your spelling (I.E American English vs. British English) is consistent throughout the manuscript. This is the simplest level of editing and is often the final step of your manuscript's journey.

  • Line Editing: This can also be referred to as copy editing. While this level of editing does not touch story structure or character arcs, line editors do revisions to sentence structure and overall paragraph flow. A good line editor will refine the manuscript by finding more colorful verbs and adjectives, cut down on repetitious phrasing, and help tighten the flow of the story while keeping true to the character and narrative voices in the manuscript.

  • Developmental Editing: The most thorough level of revision, developmental editing gets right to the bones of the story to check the strength of the foundation. The right editor will work alongside the writer to elevate their manuscript to the next level by helping their vision come to life on the pages. A developmental editor's work includes looking for plot holes, character consistency, clarity of theme, and story cohesion.
